Zara Ramsay

b.1993 - Essex

Zara Ramsay is a mixed media artist working largely in sculpture. Based in London, her works draws on the conflicting feelings she has towards living in contemporary Western society, specfically the objects coming out of it. Using her practice as a kind of quasi ethnography on her own society, the works can be viewed as both physical research and documentation of this experience.

Balenciaga Trainers,“posh toast” images and the wellness industry rub up against ritual objects, surrealism and Eastern belief systems as influences in the work. With both sincerity and satire, she attempts to give meaning to the seemingly superficical.

At the heart of Ramsay’s practice is a concern towards our changing relation to making and (dis)connection to objects and each other. Looking to remedy this, she often researches practices and dying crafts, seeking out individuals across the UK willing to pass on their skills. Most recently this has seen the artist learning wheat weaving from a member of the Guild of Strawcraftsman.

Since receiving her BA  from Central Saint Martins, Zara has continued to develop her practice independently whilst developing technical skills through studio placements including those at Troy Town Pottery, Aarron Angel’s ceramic studio. Her work has been in several exhibitions including WIMMIN II funded by Arts Council England and in 2019 she was awarded first place in ArtWorks Open, with Barbican Arts Group Trust.
